"We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."
This quote from the 1989 film Dead Poets Society is one of our favourites. 34 years later, society has become even more fast paced, money orientated and information driven and it is important to remember, for a huge number of people, it is simply impossible to keep up! There is meaning and purpose to be found beyond the stuff that sustains life.
Our clients Stuart and Kieran have both found solace, comfort and a way to express themselves through poetry. They use poetry to reflect on life and process their emotions. We think this is absolutely brilliant and also extremely inspiring. Here are some of there recent poems:
Stuart's poem - Standing Up For Justice
We must all fight for truth and justice,
And not hide behind a shield
Of cowardice and fear,
And never choose to yield.
We must stand up for all that should be,
Though we may be attacked,
But we must never run away.
Our courage must not be cracked.
So our enemies come to us,
As for you we do await.
And we must stand our ground
Against all those full of hate.
Whatever people may think of us,
Whether it be weak or strong,
Be full of determination
To put right what is wrong.
Kieran's poem - Living Life on the Spectrum: A Poem on Autism
Each mind is unique,
A universe of its own,
Where thoughts and feelings
Are never quite alone.
For some, the brain works differently,
A puzzle to solve and understand,
A way of seeing the world
That is not what we'd planned.
Autism is the label
Given to those who see
The world in their own way,
A different reality.
It can be a challenge,
A struggle to connect,
To understand and be understood
In a way that's correct.
But it's also a gift,
An insight to behold,
A way of viewing the world
That's not like anyone else's mold.
So let us embrace the difference,
And celebrate what makes us unique,
For in the tapestry of humanity,
We all have a place, so to speak.
