So, we work with quite a few people who have really struggled with depression, social anxiety and isolation. Today was one of those moments when you really appreciate and acknowledge how far they have come.
This morning we organised a session where 3 of our clients met up at a Cafe by the river in Gunthorpe.
J, who a few years ago would have struggled to go out to the local shop or get out of bed before 2pm, drove himself to the meet at 10am. He has also passed his driving test and acquired himself a dog since he joined the service. The other 2 clients, D and R were picked up from home and brought there by staff members.
All 3 of these guys have strong aspirations to push on this year and get involved in various clubs, projects or courses. They are also all friends through the service so we thought, instead of doing our usual one to one mentoring, we would create a bit of a brain storming session where everyone could contribute and come up with some ideas for each other!
The social dynamic was great and it proved to be a really effective way to create some self-belief and momentum. Together, we researched into Japanese lessons, First aid courses, Yoga classes, Poetry groups and also persuaded D to officially get involved with a collaborative autism project we are working on called One Conversation (more info to follow on this!)
90 minutes later and after consuming 3 scones (D's first ever scone for that matter) there was a clear lift in self-confidence and motivation. It could have just been a sugar high from scones but who cares!
The gang is meeting up again next Friday to see how things are progressing, to generate some more ideas and potentially commit to something new in 2019.
We'll keep you updated with how we get on :)
